gear list

Required Gear

  • Backpacking pack (65-80L)
  • Day pack (20-35L)
  • Two pairs of work pants (no big rips or holes; Dickies or Carhartts are a good choice)
  • ​Sturdy work/hiking boots (needs to reach over your ankle and be mostly leather)
  • Rain jacket
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag (rated to at least 0°F for spring & fall crews; sleeping bag liners are helpful)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Headlamp
  • Several pairs of wool or synthetic socks (avoid cotton at all costs!)
  • As much underwear as you think you’ll need
  • One or two pairs of wool, synthetic, or silk long underwear tops and bottoms (for spring and fall crews)
  • Fleece or wool jacket/sweater (for spring and fall crews)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Tupperware/storage container (to pack lunch or leftover food)
  • Toiletries (biodegradable wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush/comb, feminine hygiene products, any prescription or over the counter medications you normally need)
  • Sunscreen 
  • Insect repellent 
  • Watch with alarm or small battery operated alarm clock​

Recommended Gear

  • Camping pillow
  • Breathable camp shoes
  • Insulated mug
  • Unscented, alcohol-based hand sanitizer (there will be crew sanitizer, but having your own will come in handy)
  • Quick drying microfiber towel
  • Gaiters (for tick prevention)
  • Extra sets of clean clothes for camp and town
  • Hat (warm hat for spring and fall crews, hat with brim for summer crews)
  • Warm gloves (for spring and fall crews)

  • Rain pants
  • Pocket knife 
  • Sunglasses 
  • Bandana 
  • Phone 
  • Camera
  • Notebook & writing utensil
  • Personal reading material
  • Cards and/or small games
  • Personal water filter (we will have larger water filters on hand for the crew to use during backcountry hitches, however, some people may prefer their own)

Not Recommended Gear

  • Non-biodegradable products (they must be packed out, which means you have to take the trash with you). If you bring non-biodegradable wipes, we recommend you bring a Ziploc bag covered in duct tape and with a little baking soda inside to store the discarded packaging.

Prohibited Gear

  • Tobacco products (this includes cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, vapor, and e-cigarettes)
  • Drugs & alcohol
  • Firearms, fireworks, or explosives
  • Knives with blades over 3” long
  • Clothing with inappropriate or offensive graphics
